NIL NETWORK INSIGHT

Recap: The NCAA D1 Board of Directors elected to delay the NIL legislation indefinitely. Members of the board were frustrated by the delay but are enthusiastic that the rule changes will come sooner than later. They mentioned that the legislation has the support of most D1 conferences and student-athletes are eager for the change.

Observations: The Board of Directors was expected to follow in the footsteps of the D1 Council, which voted to delay a few days prior. However, it is unclear when the new rules will be adopted. There is a lot of pressure to pass the legislation prior to the Florida bill around NIL going into effect July 1, 2021.

Athlete Tips & Takeaways:

  • Continue preparing yourself to be able to monetize your NIL on August 1, 2021.
  • The NCAA would like to have their NIL rule changes in place prior to Florida’s bill going into effect. Make sure to stay on top of any updates from the NCAA!

Members release statement supporting the proposals

The Division I Board of Directors affirmed the Division I Council decision earlier this week delaying the adoption of new name, image and likeness rules and allowing student-athletes the chance to transfer and compete immediately, no matter what sport they play. The board met virtually Thursday as part of the 2021 NCAA Convention.

The board adopted a statement that also supported the NCAA Board of Governors’ resolution regarding name, image and likeness.

The statement reads, in part:

“Nothing about tabling the proposals should be interpreted as a retreat from the public positions and months of hard work to develop name, image and likeness opportunities for student-athletes in a manner that maintains the priorities of education and the collegiate experience, without compensation for athletics performance, thus maintaining the clear distinction between collegiate and professional opportunities.”
